Baa Atoll is quickly becoming a sought-after destination for diving enthusiasts, especially between July and September. The waters here are rich with marine life, with vibrant fish schools in the small shoal of Dhonfanu and the protected marine reserve of Dhigalhi Haa. However, the highlight of the atoll is the stunning coral ring of Hanifaaru Bay. On the western side, the coral reef splits into two, forming a cul-de-sac corridor that you can enter across from the uninhabited island of Hanifaarurah. During the South-West monsoon, the out-flowing current draws large amounts of plankton into the corridor, with the highest concentrations at the dead end. This plankton-rich environment attracts an incredible array of mantas and some whale sharks—both plankton feeders—creating a unique and mesmerizing underwater spectacle. All you need to experience this awe-inspiring event is a mask and a pair of flippers.
