Baa Atoll is rapidly gaining popularity among diving enthusiasts, particularly from July to September. The atoll offers a wealth of marine life, with abundant fish found in the small shoal of Dhonfanu and within the protected waters of the Dhigalhi Haa marine reserve. However, the highlight of Baa Atoll is the unique coral ring of Hanifaaru Bay. On the western side of the atoll, the coral reef splits into two, creating a narrow, cul-de-sac corridor. This natural formation leads to the secluded island of Hanifaarurah. During the South-West monsoon, an outflowing current draws large quantities of plankton into the bay, creating a high concentration of food at the dead-end of the corridor. This phenomenon attracts a stunning number of manta rays and occasionally whale sharks—both of which feed on plankton. It’s an unforgettable experience, and all you need to enjoy this mesmerizing sight is a mask and a pair of flippers.
